GPTZero vs Originality.ai: Which AI Detector Is More Accurate?
What It Is
This is a comparison between GPTZero and Originality.ai, two dedicated platforms built to estimate whether text was written by a human or generated by a large language model. Both are real, currently available products. GPTZero was acquired by Superhuman (the productivity company formerly known as Grammarly) in June 2026, but it continues to operate and can still be bought as a standalone tool, in addition to being integrated into Superhuman's own AI assistant. Originality.ai remains an independent company. GPTZero is built primarily for education and academic integrity, while Originality.ai is built primarily for content agencies and publishers screening freelance writing.
Key Features
- Probability scoring and color-coded, sentence-level highlights flagging suspected AI-generated passages, on both platforms.
- Plagiarism detection built into both tools: GPTZero includes it from its Essential paid tier upward, while Originality.ai bundles it into every paid tier as part of a single combined scan.
- Detection aimed at current mainstream models, including GPT-4 and newer OpenAI models, Claude, Gemini, and Llama, rather than older, now-uncommon model versions.
- GPTZero integrates directly into Canvas, Google Docs, and Microsoft Word, which matters most for classroom and institutional use.
- Originality.ai adds a built-in fact-checker and full-site or bulk scanning, aimed at agencies and publishers checking large volumes of freelance content.
Best Use Cases
- Academic integrity reviews: GPTZero fits educators and institutions screening student submissions directly inside the classroom tools they already use.
- Content verification at scale: Originality.ai fits website editors, SEO teams, and agencies who need to screen freelance writing alongside a plagiarism and fact-check pass in one scan.
Pricing Model
GPTZero has a genuine permanent free tier: 10,000 words a month with no credit card required. Paid tiers are Essential at $14.99 a month, Premium at $23.99 a month, and Professional at $45.99 a month, each roughly 40 to 45 percent cheaper on annual billing, plus custom Team and Enterprise pricing for larger institutions. Originality.ai has no ongoing free plan, only a one-time Pay-As-You-Go option at $30 for 3,000 credits that stays valid for two years. Its subscription tiers are Pro at $14.95 a month for 2,000 monthly credits, and Enterprise at $179 a month for 15,000 monthly credits plus API access, both discounted on annual billing.
My Take
GPTZero is the better fit for teachers and schools who want a tool with real classroom integrations and a usable free tier to start from. Originality.ai is the better fit for content teams and agencies who want plagiarism, fact-checking, and AI detection bundled into one paid scan, and who don't mind skipping a free tier. Neither is a good match for anyone who wants a single definitive yes-or-no verdict on a piece of writing: both tools' accuracy drops noticeably on heavily edited or paraphrased text, and AI detectors in this category have a well-documented history of false positives that has disproportionately affected non-native English writers. One real caveat: treat either tool's score as a starting point for a human review, not as standalone proof of AI use, especially in any setting, like a graded assignment, where a wrong flag has real consequences for the person being screened.
