How to Use Google's AI Tools for Ad Copy and Campaign Optimization

What It Is

Google's AI features in Google Ads use generative AI to help advertisers create ad copy, headlines, and descriptions directly inside the campaign builder. The tools analyze a landing page and any prompts you give them to suggest relevant text assets, keywords, and campaign settings. They also work alongside Google's automated bidding and targeting systems, which adjust campaigns in real time based on performance data.

Key Features

  • Automated text generation: generates headlines and descriptions for Responsive Search Ads and Performance Max campaigns based on your landing page URL and any prompts you provide.
  • Conversational campaign setup: a chat-based feature inside Google Ads where you describe what you want in plain language and the AI suggests keywords, assets, and campaign structure.
  • Smart Bidding and targeting automation: machine learning that automatically adjusts bids and ad placement across Google's networks based on your campaign goals.

Best Use Cases

  • Advertisers who need to quickly produce several variations of ad copy and headlines for testing.
  • Small business owners who want guided help setting up a Search campaign without hiring a dedicated copywriter.

Pricing Model

Free. The AI creation and automation tools carry no separate subscription or fee. Advertisers only pay standard media costs, the clicks and impressions their campaigns generate, the same as any other Google Ads account.

My Take

This is a good fit if you already run, or plan to run, Search or Performance Max campaigns and want to speed up asset creation, as long as you're willing to review and edit what the AI produces rather than publish it as-is. It's a weaker fit if you want tight manual control over exact-match targeting: Google has confirmed that starting September 2026, existing Dynamic Search Ads and broad-match campaigns will be automatically moved onto AI Max, which broadens targeting and rewrites ad text by default unless you set exclusions yourself. One more real limit worth knowing: the conversational setup tool doesn't work for restricted verticals like political content, gambling, or adult content, so advertisers in those categories will still be building campaigns manually.
