How to Connect ChatGPT to Apple Messages

What It Is

The Apple Messages plugin is a real, currently available feature from OpenAI, launched on August 20, 2026. It connects the ChatGPT desktop app for Mac to Apple's Messages app so the assistant can read, search, summarize, draft, and send iMessage, SMS, and RCS conversations. It works through standard macOS tools like AppleScript and Accessibility rather than a hidden background service, and it is not a way to text with ChatGPT itself.

Key Features

  • Reads and searches iMessage, SMS, and RCS history on request, without building a standing index of every message you've ever sent.
  • Drafts replies for you, but sending requires your approval for each message by default. OpenAI advises against turning on persistent approval, since that removes your last chance to check a message before it goes out as you.
  • Can delete messages and help you sort through and clean up a cluttered thread.
  • Requires macOS Full Disk Access, plus Contacts and Automation permissions, to function.
  • Built into ChatGPT Work and Codex for professional use. Only works inside the ChatGPT desktop app on Mac. It does not work on iPhone, iPad, ChatGPT's web version, Codex CLI, or the IDE extension.

Best Use Cases

  • Catching up on and replying to texts from the day before without scrolling back through every thread.
  • Searching a long message history for one specific detail, like an address or a date someone mentioned weeks earlier.

Pricing Model

The plugin itself has no separate price. It comes with the ChatGPT desktop app for Mac on every plan, including the free tier, and it is also part of ChatGPT Work and Codex. Current ChatGPT subscription tiers are Free, Go at 8 dollars a month, Plus at 20 dollars a month, and Pro at 200 dollars a month. None of them charge extra to turn the Messages plugin on.

My Take

This fits a Mac based professional who spends real time every day rereading and answering texts and wants that work folded into ChatGPT. It does not fit anyone on iPhone only, on Windows, or anyone who only uses ChatGPT on the web, since none of those support it. It also does not fit someone who is uneasy handing Full Disk Access and Contacts permissions to a third party app. The real caveat: turning this on exposes the messages of everyone who has ever texted you, and they were never asked. And while the plugin's mechanics run on your Mac, the message content itself still gets sent to OpenAI's models to generate a reply, so this is not the same thing as a fully offline feature. Leave default approval turned on so a human checks every outgoing message before it sends.
